Cephea's chanting stones
duo Khurtova & Bourlanges
exhibition at the Bookstore space, Amsterdam, 2016
Cephea's chanting stones is a part of a long term project The Sky is on the Earth. Based on a peculiar text of Jacques Bourlanges dedicated to the constellation of Cephea, Khurtova & Bourlanges developed sculptural translations in porcelain. Playing with the double etymology of Cephea as “stone” and “head”, the duo explored the fictional narratives superimposed on natural elements like stones and attempted to give them back their own “voice”. Referring to ritual practices with healing stones found in the Cévennes region of France, the duo experiments with touching over recreated stones, enabling them to “speak”.
Sound artists Maia Lyon Daw and Jonathan Sachse Mikkelsen played live the ’voices’ of a series of our porcelain stones. Performances at the Bookstore space, Amsterdam, October 2016 and at Paleis van Mieris, Amsterdam, January 2017
